JOB SUMMARY

The ORTHOPEDIC TECHNOLOGIST assists physicians with the application, adjustment, and removal of casts and orthopedic devices. Orthopedic technologists work under the direct supervision of the physician and department manager or as specified by facility policies and procedures.

EDUCATION

Successful completion of an orthopedic assistant's program combining academic work and clinical training.

LICENSURE

State specific.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum 2 years experience as Ortho RN

use of rapid response teams

orthopedic and trauma experience required

specializes in pre-op and post-op ortho

elective and or trauma patient experience needed.

CREDENTIALS

Current CPR; and other health and screening tests as required by specific facilities and/or regulatory agencies.

BLS required and ACLS Prefered

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Various client facility settings; possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious materials.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Complies with ATC policies/procedures.
  • Complies with client facility policies/procedures.
  • Provides patient care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that considers cultural diversity and age appropriateness so that autonomy, rights, and dignity are preserved.
  • Maintains confidentiality relative to patient care and facility practices in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Maintains competency by participating in continuing education programs and meets state-specific requirements, if applicable.
  • Complies with accepted ethical conduct and professional standards of conduct.
  • Explains procedure to patient and assists patient in proper positioning for the treatment.
  • Prepares injured area for application of cast; applies cast as directed by physician.
  • Provides instructions to patient for proper care of cast or brace. Fits patient to crutches if required and gives instructions in proper operation.
  • Assembles and adjusts traction frame to accommodate needs of patient; attaches traction support to limb and adjusts tension as specified.
  • Removes casts and instructs patients in exercise to restore mobility and strength.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of casting supplies and keeps equipment in proper working condition.
  • Recognizes and responds to emergencies according to facility protocol.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
