The ICU Registered Nurse provides advanced, high acuity care to critically ill adult patients at Sentara. This per diem role offers flexible scheduling for day or night shifts. The ICU RN must demonstrate strong critical care skills, rapid clinical assessment, and the ability to respond effectively to changes in patient condition. A minimum of 2+ years of recent ICU experience is required, and the candidate must be able to start ASAP.


Key Responsibilities

Critical Care & Monitoring

  • Deliver comprehensive care to critically ill patients with complex medical, surgical, cardiac, and respiratory needs.
  • Perform detailed patient assessments, evaluate vital signs, and analyze lab and diagnostic results.
  • Manage ventilators, titratable drips, central/arterial lines, and other advanced ICU equipment.
  • Respond rapidly to clinical deterioration, codes, and emergency situations.

Clinical Interventions

  • Administer medications, blood products, and interventions according to physician orders and hospital protocols.
  • Utilize strong critical thinking and clinical judgment to guide care decisions.
  • Maintain strict adherence to ICU best practices, infection prevention, and patient safety standards.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Provide clear communication during hand offs, rounds, and patient updates.
  • Educate patients and families regarding conditions, treatments, and care plans.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation in the EMR system.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and ICU clinical standards.
  • Uphold HIPAA, patient privacy protections, and ethical nursing practice.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (state specific).
  • Minimum 2+ years of recent ICU experience in a hospital setting.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • Proficiency in ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, and titration of critical medications.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt quickly to changing clinical conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BSN preferred (not required).
  • CCRN or other critical care certifications.
  • Experience in a Level I or II trauma or high acuity ICU.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and crisis management skills.

Work Environment

  • Critical care unit at Sentara, serving a diverse, high acuity adult patient population.
  • Fast paced, demanding environment requiring strong clinical focus and resilience.
  • Per diem scheduling with availability for day or night shifts.
  • Requires standing, lifting, and assisting patients, along with operation of complex clinical equipment.
